As you might know from previous newsletters, I sometimes like to do a little research on our themes. It was so illuminating during prep for the “Guy Fawkes” episode that I thought I would do the same for our next theme, “Bass,” and once again I have learned my knowledge is not what I thought it was.
Let’s start with the etymology of the word bass. I assumed Latin roots, but bass actually comes from the Middle English bars, meaning “perch,” despite the fact none of the species commonly known as bass belong to the perch family. And, it turns out there are quite a few types of fish known as bass that aren’t actually bass, either, including the Chilean sea bass, which is actually in the cod family, and…
Hold on… What’s that? Oh, really? Sorry, my bad.
I’ve just been informed that the theme is not the short a bass but rather the long a bass, and frankly, that makes a lot more sense. Though, what am I going to do with all these fish facts now?
Anyway, BASS! Hell yeah. I’m thinking we can expect some funk, we can expect some moods, we can almost certainly expect some Tom Waits and/or Leonard Cohen growling at us.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait. In the meantime, I’m kinda hungry. Maybe some seabass?
LET'S GOOOOOO!
